Eyebrow Hair Transplantation

20’s and older; permanent eyebrow enhancement using your own hair, increases fullness and/or thickness, allows for change of shape and increased length

Fuller, more shapely eyebrows are currently one of the most desirable attributes of the face, and everyone seems to be seeking ways to improve their brows.  Many treatments exist to attempt to simulate the appearance of a perfect brow including eyebrow tattooing and microblading, however, the results tend to fade and never really look natural.  Why undergo procedures that don’t last and look unnatural when you could achieve a completely natural look by having an eyebrow transplant using your own hair?

Eyebrows are one of the most important features that set the structure and balance of your face.  From wanting fuller eyebrows when you are younger to reversing thinning eyebrows from the aging process in your forties and beyond, Dr. Champagne’s signature Champagne Brows ®️ (eyebrow hair transplants) are extremely popular amongst any generation.  The hair is your own real hair and the results last a lifetime.

We recently caught up with Frances (@TheFrancesFlorence) to discuss her eyebrow hair transplantation procedure that she underwent 8 months ago. Find out what she thinks of her results and what she thought of her experience with expert facial plastic surgeon Dr. Jason Champagne.

Through techniques known as Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT) and/or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) which Dr. Champagne utilizes to move individual hairs from an area of greater density on your scalp (and in some cases, from your body) to your eyebrows, Dr. Champagne is able to achieve a completely natural looking fuller, more shapely brow.  Dr. Champagne is a world-leader in eyebrow hair transplantation and fully understands the importance of an individualized approach to achieving optimal results.  Everyone’s facial structure and eyebrow shapes are different.  Dr. Champagne will personally design your eyebrows along with your input to achieve the look that you desire.

Certain medications will need to be avoided both before and after your procedure such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements, which can increase bleeding. Champagne Brows - EYEBROW HAIR TRANSPLANTATION Q & A

Q: What hair types are best for eyebrow transplantation?

A: There is a range of hair types that can allow for a realistic look. In general straight to wavy hair provides the most natural appearing results. Patients who have a loose curl to their can also achieve natural results but will likely require the use of brow gel or wax to maintain a natural look to their eyebrows. The diagram below shows the spectrum of hair types which ranges from 1a to 4c. In Dr. Champagne’s experience, patients who have up hair type 3b can achieve natural-looking results keeping in mind that greater curl requires more maintenance.

Q: Are patients with alopecia candidates for eyebrow transplantation?

A: There are various types of alopecia. In general, patients with alopecia totalis or universalis are not candidates for eyebrow transplantation since they lack viable hair follicles required for transplantation. In addition, patients with scarring alopecia, especially frontal fibrosing alopecia, are not good candidates for the procedure. Patients with androgenetic alopecia (a.k.a. male pattern and female pattern baldness) can be candidates for eyebrow hair transplantation but will need to be evaluated on an individualized basis to determine candidacy.

Q: Can someone else’s hair be transplanted into my brows?

A: Unfortunately, someone else’s hair cannot be transplanted. Your body will simply reject the donor hair.

Q: If I have microblading or tattoo pigment, can I still undergo an eyebrow transplant?

A: Yes, previous microblading or tattooing is not a contraindication to having an eyebrow transplant, however, scar tissue from the process of microblading or tattooing can reduce the anticipated regrowth of hair. In these cases, Dr. Champagne will recommend PRP treatment to the brows to help improve growth. In some instances, patients may also wish to undergo a second procedure to increase density.

Q: How soon after microblading can I undergo eyebrow transplantation?

A: It is reasonable to undergo eyebrow hair transplantation 3 months after your most recent microblading session.

Q: Do I need to remove the tattoo pigment or wait for it to fade before having an eyebrow transplant?

A: The short answer is no. However, if you are unhappy with the shape of your previous tattoo, you may opt to have it removed prior to having an eyebrow transplant.

Q: I’ve heard that the transplanted hairs fall out after surgery. Is this true, and if so, when does this happen?

A: It is true that the majority of transplanted hairs hair fall out and this occurs between 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. This is a completely normal aspect of the procedure.

Q: When do I start to see results?

A: New hairs will begin to grow in around 3 to 4 months after your procedure, and it can take up to one year to see your best results.

Q: Are the results temporary or permanent?

A: The results of an eyebrow hair transplantation are completely permanent.

Q: Where is the hair taken from?

A: The best and most reliable donor hair is taken from the scalp, most commonly in the back, but sometimes above the ear due to their quality of similar texture and established pattern of regrowth.

Q: Can I use body hair as donor hair?

A: Patients have requested using body hair for donor to the eyebrows, however, with years of experience, Dr. Champagne does not recommend this due to the unreliability of regrowth of the hairs and associated reduced density as well as difference in texture.

Q: How soon after eyebrow transplantation can I wear makeup in my brows?

A: It is recommended to wait 6 weeks after your procedure to apply makeup (foundation, pencil, etc.) to your brows in order to reduce the risk of formation of pimples and/or infection which can significantly reduce hair growth results.

Q: How soon after eyebrow transplantation can I begin using brow gel?

A: It is safe to start using brow gel 4 weeks after your procedure. Be sure to use a clean brush for application, and only apply to the hairs without occluding the skin surface.

Q: I’ve read about patient’s who say that their eyebrow hairs grow away from their face and in all directions making the results look unnatural.  Is this possible, and why does this happen?

A: Dr. Champagne is an expert in eyebrow hair transplantation and has performed the procedure on patients from around the globe including celebrities who are always in the spotlight.  This problem occurs when there is a lack of attention to detail and a lack of knowledge of hair growth. Dr. Champagne is able to avoid this happening because he truly understands natural hair growth and direction and takes care to place each and every hair in the proper direction and angle to achieve unsurpassed results.

Q: Does Dr. Champagne perform Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)?

A: Yes, in fact Dr. Champagne has published book chapters on the subject and is an expert in both FUT ( Follicular Unit Transfer aka “Strip” method) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant procedures. During your consultation he will help decide which treatment would be best to meet your goals.

Q: Can I design my own eyebrows?

A: Absolutely! Of course there are certain parameters within which natural eyebrows are found, but Dr. Champagne will sit with you and draw in your eyebrows along with your guidance prior to making any decisions on the final shape and fullness to be achieved. Many patients are used to drawing in their own eyebrows and typically come in to their consultation with their desired shape already penciled in. As an artist, Dr. Champagne will be able to increase width, height, length and density to match your idea of the perfect brow.

Q: Can I change the shape of my eyebrows?

A: Definitely. There are many shapes from which you can choose including straight, curved, high arch, soft arch, upward and “s” shaped along with other variations.  Dr. Champagne will review these with you to help you decide what will be best for you.

Q: What’s the downtime for Eyebrow Hair Transplantation?

Q: When will I see results / my hair grown in?

A: Because of the natural hair cycle process, patients typically start to see hair growth 3-4 months after their procedure.

Q: What type of anesthesia will you use?

A: Eyebrow hair transplantation is an in-office procedure, and Dr. Champagne is able to keep you very comfortable with the use of medications. (most patients sleep through the procedure!)

Q: When are the follicles secure (can’t pop out)?

A: After transplantation, hair follicles are firmly secure within 4-5 days following your procedure.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY?

Downtime following eyebrow hair transplantation is minimal. In many instances, patients can return to normal light activities and even work after a day or two. Small scabs will be present around each hair graft within the eyebrows for up to 10 days following your procedure. Through the normal hair cycle, many of the implanted hairs fall initially during the first few weeks after your procedure and new hairs begin to grow and are visible after 3 to 4 months following transplantation.
