The septum is a structure on the inside of your nose that separates the left and right nasal passages. Whether it occurred naturally or due to a nasal fracture, the septum can be shifted or bent in such a way that it obstructs your ability to breathe through your nose. During consultation, Dr. Champagne will evaluate your nose for this problem which can be corrected with a septoplasty to improve your ability to breathe through your nose.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?
One may be a good candidate for septoplasty if you experience nasal airway obstruction that is not adequately relieved with medical management such as topical nasal sprays or allergy treatments. On nasal exam, internal structural deformity may appear to contribute significantly to your symptoms. Also, you may be a good candidate if you experience frequent nose bleeds.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY?
Externally, the nose will appear normal since surgery is performed on the inside of the nose. Nasal packing is removed after 24 hours, and internal splints placed during surgery are removed after seven days. Once nasal packing is removed, frequent nasal rinses with saline help speed recovery. Nasal congestion can last two to three weeks.
